MacDevCenter has an article on ipfw capability in 10.3, which, if anyone remembers, I tried to scrape together on my own. Perhaps I’ll try again.

I just heard a new word on PBS watching WAVE. Volcanology is the scientific study of volcanoes and ‘volcanic phenomena’ whatever that is. You can’t turn your back on the english language for a second.

Queen Latifa on the Tonight Show say that she was proud of her athletic ability. That’s like me bragging about my marathon running last week.
Ars Technica has a VERY informative article on the case to date. Read it and be informed.
I’ve slowly started tackling the idea that my laptop needs to exemplify my commitment to security. My focus is on net security and I’m finally finished compiling DarwinPorts. My installation of Nessus didn’t go so well because I didn’t have X11 to install the GUI part of it, so I installed CLI only. Bad move on my part since it is VERY command line intensive (I’m thinking of submitting that phrase to use for CLI instead of command line interface, it seems more useful and descriptive) and I wanted some kind of GUI. So, I installed DarwinPorts and am currently reinstalling Ethereal to see if that will make it work properly. More on this when I break it again.
Katie has been fighting off a cold for the past week and as a consequence, has been napping like its her job. This is good and bad because it gets me some computer time uninterrupted and she likes to talk when we are going to sleep. I’m not sure if this means that she’s not actually gaining any sleep or she thinks nocturnal communication is important to our relationship, but I’m betting on the latter. For example, she is sleeping next to me on the couch as I type this and will be wide awake in an hour when I watch “The West Wing.” Speaking of which…
can someone tell me when Josh became such a turncoat? I understand that he was slowly and not so subtly pushed out during season 5, but he seems to be stuck in a rut of inspiring other candidates to find their own ethics while he is constantly playing the “ethics” game himself. I miss his witty banter with Donna and Toby’s bouncing the ball against Sam’s window. I understand that Bartlett is a lame-duck president, who could not know this after watching the Castro episode, but the show worked with the crew they had and right now I’m starting to find other things to do when it is on.
Anyway, look at the Boards for more on installs through CLI on OS X 10.2
The federal government passing laws for a single person? Did I just read that right? Don’t we have a Republican majority? Is not the first tenent of Republican belief that state control (small, local government) is paramount? This is an ideological shift, I think. After reading the LA Times, the NY Times, and the WSJ (don’t try this link unless you already subscribe to WSJ Online, you won’t get to read it. I’m snobbish like that.) stories about Terry Schiavo in Florida, I am convinced that being a Republican in 2005 has suddenly changed. I remember when the roles would be reversed about 10 years ago and Clinton would have tried this very same thing. Now, I applaud President Bush for being concerned about Terry. I’m glad that Washington reads the paper and can respond quickly, no matter how shortsighted they are behaving. But this kind of thing just isn’t the duty of Congress and the President to sign new laws into being. Republicans have gone power-crazy. It is the only possible answer. Why pass a law when you can go down to your brother’s state and make a plea on Terry’s behalf? Hold a fundraiser for her care or put pressure on her husband to back down. Don’t make a law out of it, that’s what Democrats do.
Republicans were quoted as saying this is a right-to-life issue, like Terry is some kind of fetus with unfathomable potential. Guess what, she’s brain-dead. If it was my wife, I would want her to rest in peace. I don’t blame her husband for trying to finish this ordeal. I am so confused as to how Congress is going to take any responsibility in the coming years for Terry Schiavo if they succeed in putting a tube back in her, by the way. Are senators and congresspersons going to stop by and say hi? No, because she can’t hold a conversation. What is so special about Terry Schiavo that a law must be passed in the dead of night just for her? She iconigraphic of our current leadership’s inability to grasp the real world. By its very nature, Washington is insular. How else to keep our representatives safe than to keep them out of touch with what real people think? How do I know this? Well, the WSJ has an impromptu poll entitled, “Was Congress right to intervene in the dispute over removing a Florida woman’s feeding tube?” As of 14:13 PST 81% said no. WSJ readers have to be kinda smart, they are paying about $7/month for web access. I agree that that Congress should stay out of this. Micromanage something else.
As you can tell, I put a subject of the day when I don’t have anything in particular to say. I’m back from Dave’s wedding and will have the picts up eventually, though I must sift through them all first and there are over 150. I’m still looking for a job in Columbus and got a couple emails back that were vague, but encouraging. They want to start interviewing face-to-face, so I have to make some phone calls. I’m not really sure what I’m going to say, but hopefully something will come of this.
We’ve set a date for the LA reception which is exciting. I hope to see everyone there who can be. The Spokane reception is still up in the air, but sooner than later is always a good idea to me.
I just finished watching Capturing the Friedmans and I am convinced that people will lie to save themselves in any perceived perilous situation. The idea that “nothing happened” at that house is absurd. There was abuse, definitely. Abuse of the Friedman’s children, but nothing else. It doesn’t make sense to have this father and son team abusing boys, since there was NO PHYSICAL EVIDENCE. If there is one thing you learn on every CSI show is that there is always physical evidence of a crime. There were magazines, that is physical evidence. But there was no blood, semen, or other fluids anywhere in the house where all kinds of alleged acts were performed. It just doesn’t make sense. That chaos is what the filmmaker Andrew Jarecki wanted to portray through the documentary/movie. There is definite bias through the filmmaker’s eyes when you hear the voice off camera ask if there was any physical evidence of the detective on the case. A shocking look at media and hysterics of communities of people in a moment of peril.
I’m here, finally. After meeting Dave’s family again, I’m sure that I’ll never remember all the kids names. Dave’s sister has SEVEN kids now, two from a marriage alone. I’m excited to be a part of a traditional Catholic wedding ceremony and I even get to do a reading. I’ll be back in Spokane on Tuesday if anyone’s interested.
The KHQ website has the top story of the day, “Mount Saint Helens Erupts.” The “full story” is only 179 words long and actually misspells the word “glacier.” What kind of news is this? It isn’t really news, its sensationalist gossip. I want to know what is happening at Mt. St. Helens, but don’t say that its erupting and then describe the activity as the “latest volcanic burp.” This kind of reporting makes me want to call someone and yell at them for pandering to the lowest common public denominator. Did the volcano erupt today? Dictionary.com says that erupt is “To emerge violently from restraint or limits” or “explode.” I suppose the steam from Mt. St. Helens was “unexpected” which is a later definition, but there definitely was no explosion. As well, the colloquial definition of the word conjures up visions of searing lava shooting everywhere and running through streets. There was definitely no lava. So, I protest the use of “erupts,” KHQ and MSNBC. Shame on you.
If you want to see it yourself, go to the VolcanoCam and rely no more on sensationalist journalism.
On a more personal note, I have been creating a FAQ for Anything Binary and I realized that I have some pent up anger about people IGNORING this labor of digital art of mine. I absolutely hate it when someone I talk to asks me what is going on with me when they know that I have a blog, a website, several email addresses, FIVE IM addresses, an 800 number and a cell phone. There is no way they could miss me, yet they are unaware that I’m looking for a job in Ohio at the moment. People. I put this information out there for you…partly. Mostly this site is for me, but I like feedback. Don’t forget that I’m not always going to be down the street. I’m moving in two months. This site will be my first place of communication. Start checking it now.
