Comcast

Outages galore right now. I’ve hedged my bets by using another DNS server from my hosting site, which works, I think. I’m browsing again, but that doesn’t mean that my fix was THE fix. I’ve read that Comcast is getting hit by a pharming technique, which I can believe, but I think its probably just disgruntled old Unix geeks upset that they are getting their asses kicked by 8 year-olds in Halo 2. I know that I am.

Teleport!

So, I’ve got both a laptop and a desktop, both running OS X. SmkViper was showing me Multiplicity, a Windows program that allowed one mouse and keyboard to control several computers, and I wondered if something like that existed for the Mac. The latest issue of MacWorld (May, 2005) gives the info for Teleport. This is seriously beta (read unstable) but I’m running it with no difficulty right now. It is VERY cool. Theoretically, Multiplicity will have an OS X client as well. I won’t hold my breath, but eventually it would be cool to control both Windows and Mac from one central keyboard and mouse. Ah, to dream!

Rainfall

So, the NOAA has released the most recent precipitation/drought estimates and it doesn’t seem good for Spokane. We’ll be short unless there is some serious rain in our future, otherwise drought conditions will come into effect.

It is amazing that we don’t have someone to stop new people from coming into a new city or to warn a city about its population as related to how much the surrounding land will sustain. I suppose that is unrealistic, what with the fuck-it American way that everyone is so proud of, but we have a responsibility to ourselves to limit growth. Yes, that’s right. I said limit growth. That is taboo in this consumer-driven society, but resources can only become more scarce. I wonder what we will see in 50 years and how we will be living. I somehow doubt suburbs will be the norm and food production will be premium business. Hopefully, the X-Prize will spur on growth in space exploration because we certainly need it. Sigh.

Dice?

Thanks to Will, I had to take an online quiz to satisfy my curiosity of what kind of dice I am:

Take the quiz at dicepool.com

Damn you, Will! Now everyone will know that:

You are the rare, the overlooked, yet incredibly useful dodecahedron: the d12. You are a creative, romantic soul. You often act without thinking, but make up for your lack of plans with plenty of heart. You easily solve problems that stump others, but your answers tend to put you into even deeper trouble. You write long, detailed backgrounds for all your characters, and are most likely to dress up as one or get involved in cos-play. You can be silly at times and are easily distracted by your own day dreams, but are at the end of the day you’re someone who can be depended on.
