I was so disgusted with Windows…

I barred myself from posting for a while, but it was too much when Judy turned 55 today.

Windows really does NOT get the job done

So I’m trying to copy a file from Georgia (OS X 10.4) to Deidre (Win XP Pro) and I try to mount Deidre’s share.  I have done this many times before and it is always successful.  This time, it doesn’t work.  I get a -36 error.  Reboot both machines and still same error.  I have updated both machines with latest patches and yet still no go.  So I assume that Georgia is to blame and start clearing out the keychain and making strange files to help my connection go smoothly.  That doesn’t work  and I’m ready to tackle Deidre.  I backup the registry and start changing encryption settings and running the “gpupdate” DOS command to hurry my changes along.  Nothing works.  Then I realize I don’t see the little hand that denotes that Deidre is sharing the directory.  Go to the Server service and it is turned off, even though it is set to automatic!  Start service and everything works fine.

I think software that randomly turns on and off settings should be erased and cursed daily.

And the Hits…

I stayed home today and made frantic phone calls to various people that I want to make aware of my flooding problem.  The home warranty people, the plumber that installed the new water heater, the claims adjuster, and the insurance guy.  The insurance guy basically said you’re covered, but the claims adjuster needs to declare it.  The claims adjuster called once, left a message, and didn’t return my four subsequent phone calls.  The home warranty people called to verify that I did get the water heater replaced and that it doubles for my heating, which it does.  They didn’t know if that entitled me to the additional “boiler” amount or not.  The plumber didn’t know if I qualified for the “boiler” either, but did fix the water heater to the point that I have hot water again, so I’ll chalk this day up as a win.  The downside is that the heat appliance, separate from the water heater, has a leak and was taking all the hot water whenever I turned on the hot water faucet, so I turned that off.  When the plumber came over, he got his friend on the line and all three of us agreed that the heater appliance needed something, but that was a different incident claim that I have to call in before I can have the home warranty pay for it.  Geez, sometimes I really hate being a grown-up.  I’m going to bed and hope that my air conditioner doesn’t go out tomorrow.

The Water Heater Dies a Wet Death

I’ve tried to stay away from this medium of communication and focus more on individual emails to people, but I must be too selfish because I haven’t written a single email of consequence.  So, instead of sending a mass email today bemoaning my “tragedy” of my water heater flooding my basement this morning and calling the home warranty company and two different plumbers to finally get someone to look at the damn thing and diagnose it as “bad” and proceed to rip it out and put in another one, I will post it here.

FUCK.

So, its not as bad I think it is, but the carpet around the water heater is definitely wet, but the squishing noises it used to make, when I discovered water soaking through all my boxes in my basement, are gone.   It could have been worse.  My current home warranty expires in two days and since they only cover $500 once per year, I could have been stuck with the new warranty gone belly up right after it became active.  I still don’t know if the carpet is salvagable, but I keep going downstairs to see if something is going wrong every hour or so.  You take for granted all the modern conveniences until they go away, like hot water.  The new water heater seems to have a problem putting out hot water at the moment.  I’m not sure if its because the hot water takes so long to heat or if the damn thing was hooked up wrong, but I’m definitely sceptical of all major appliances right now.
